December 20, 2003, by Jim (Dinner Party, #1)

There are some times, and some conversations, that you know you will remember for a very long time. One of these was a memorable dinner at our house with three people we believe will be very significant in our work. From left to right, Sibongile (holding our puppy Boetie), Chris, Zanele, and Marilyn. Marilyn is one of the founders of the Women's Leadership and Training Program, a branch of which she now directs at the Reichenau Catholic mission near Underberg. She is an eco-feminist who worked for ten years in the Catholic Bishop's Justice and Peace Commission during the struggle against apartheid. Sibongile is a member of the management team in the Program at Reichenau, Her particular interests are gender equity and issues of the earth. Zanele is coordinator of the AIDS Project in the Program, also helping women work through gender issues. She is involved in promotion of Bushmen (San) culture.

The conversation among the five of us was exciting, fun, informative, connecting, touching, humbling, interesting, thought-provoking and challenging. Once again, Chris and I recognized that we have so much to learn here, and these women are great teachers. No doubt they will help in many ways to connect us to the Ndawana community, as well as to the wider world of South Africa , and help us explore ways we can be of help in Ndawana. We have recognized from the beginning that working with and through women will be the key to our work, and we feel very fortunate to have connected with these particular women so early in our time here.
